As organisations worldwide set their priorities for the new year, MD has demonstrated its commitment to employee safety by organising a comprehensive fire training session for all staff members. The forward-thinking initiative, held at the beginning of the year, equipped employees with essential fire safety knowledge and practical skills that could prove lifesaving in emergency situations.

The training session covered three critical areas: understanding different types of fires, identifying appropriate fire extinguishers, and mastering proper extinguisher operation techniques.

MDS staff learned that not all fires are the same, and each type requires a specific approach for safe extinguishment. The training covered the main fire classes, including Class A fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood and paper, Class B fires fueled by flammable liquids such as gasoline and oil, Class C fires involving electrical equipment, and Class K fires common in kitchen environments involving cooking oils and fats. Understanding these distinctions is crucial, as using the wrong extinguishing method can actually worsen certain fire situations.

The session also provided hands-on demonstrations of various extinguisher types matched to specific fire classes. Staff members examined water extinguishers suitable for Class A fires, foam extinguishers effective against Class A and B fires, CO2 extinguishers designed for electrical fires, dry powder extinguishers offering multi-purpose protection, and wet chemical extinguishers specifically created for kitchen fires. Each extinguisher was clearly labeled with its appropriate uses, helping staff members make quick, informed decisions during emergencies.

The highlight of the training was the practical demonstration of proper extinguisher use. Instructors taught the PASS technique, a simple acronym that ensures effective operation: Pull the pin to break the tamper seal, Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire rather than the flames, Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent, and Sweep from side to side while maintaining distance from the fire. Staff members had the opportunity to practice these steps, building confidence and muscle memory that would serve them well in high-stress emergency situations.

Building a Safety-First Culture

MDs’ investment in this fire safety training reflects a broader organizational philosophy that values employee wellbeing and proactive risk management. By empowering staff with practical safety skills at the year’s outset, the organization has reinforced that safety is not an afterthought but a fundamental priority woven into daily operations.

The training also fostered a sense of collective responsibility, reminding employees that workplace safety is a shared commitment. Staff members left the session not only with new skills but also with increased awareness of fire hazards and prevention strategies they can apply throughout the workplace.

As MDs continue to set the standard for workplace safety, this fire training initiative serves as a model for other organisations seeking to protect their most valuable asset: their people. In taking these proactive steps, MDs have demonstrated that true leadership means preparing for challenges before they arise and ensuring every team member has the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in critical moments.
